Best 1st-Level Spells in D&D 5e: The Picks You’ll Cast All Campaign
1 April 2026
Most campaigns live in the 1st–5th level range long enough that your 1st-level spells matter a lot. The best picks are the ones you keep preparing (or wishing you knew) even after you get higher slots.
If spellcasting still feels fuzzy:
The “best” 1st-level spells (by role)
Best defense picks
These spells keep you alive — and survival is the best DPS increase in the game.
- A reaction defense option (if your class has one)
- A panic button escape/mobility option (if available)
Best control picks
Control spells win fights by denying enemy turns, positions, or actions. Even simple control is strong at low levels.
Best utility picks
Utility spells reduce risk: scouting, safe movement, social leverage, and information.
How to choose: 3-spell starter kit
If you’re new, start with:
- One defensive spell
- One control spell
- One utility spell
This spread keeps you useful in every kind of session.
Upcasting (when it’s worth it)
Some 1st-level spells scale well with higher slots. Others don’t. If a spell has an “At Higher Levels” section, it scales.
More on slot choices:
Common mistakes
- Spending your last slot early “just to do damage.”
- Ignoring concentration: many “best spells” are best because they last.
- Choosing only combat spells and having nothing for exploration/social scenes.
